Meet Miss Lisa - Our Principal Facilitator

Lisa Darmanie de Quiñones is a multilinguist and music educator and is the the first certified Early Childhood Music and Movement Specialist in Trinidad & Tobago. Her keen ear for music and foreign languages began developing in the early years, having been mesmerized by her father's ability to play his favourite songs on the piano by ear and hearing him speak Spanish.

With an inseparable attachment to Music and Spanish since childhood, she pursued them both and holds Honours Degrees in Spanish and Musical Arts from U.W.I and accredited certification from the Early Childhood Music and Movement Association ECMMA, USA. Alongside specialized training in early childhood music including Gordon Music Learning, Dalcroze Eurhythmics, her two decades of experience in education span across age levels, having taught at Preschool, Primary and Secondary, adults too but always naturally gravitating towards working with the youngest children and she enjoys the interactions with families.

Miss Lisa put Trinidad & Tobago on the map as the first country in the Caribbean to offer the internationally acclaimed Musikgarten programme, adapting it to include even more local and regional folk music repertoire while adding a bilingual component for families to acquire Spanish language together through music. Her bilingual experiences continue at home with her Venezuelan-born husband Mr. J Quiñones who is also quite musical.

In addition to being a formally trained pianist, she has been engaged over the years as an accomplished and versatile musician and keyboard accompanist, delighting in choral arranging, directing and conducting the adult band at San Fernando Open Bible Church, training school choruses & steelbands, being involved in musical-theatre productions with the UWI Festival Arts Chorale and serving as a judge for Parang, Calypso & Steelpan competitions at national level. She occasionally expresses her artistic creativity in pencil portraiture but is not going to miss out on playing a good game of tennis, cricket and is a strong advocate of healthy living.

Ms Lisa's God-given passion is to draw families closer together through broad-based music activities while bringing folk music back into the homes by creating nurturing and enriching musical and multilingual experiences from young, helping children grow to become beautiful, resilient human beings.

Description: This Music Makers at Home class is Part 1 of our year-long Piano Preparatory curriculum designed to bridge the gap between earlier Family Music Classes and the groundbreaking Music Makers: At the Piano class. Children almost 5 years and older are now ready for a more structured music learning experience.

This Music Makers class cultivates the child's musical development through singing, tonal and rhythm patterns, poetry and stories, movement activities, guided listening, instrumental play and manipulative games. Activities are presented in a developmentally sound, playful manner; the focus is on learning through process rather than performance.

Children begin learning more about rests, common melodic patterns, rhythmic patterns, tempo, dynamics and instrument classification etc. Parents join in towards the end of the session.

We will be doing a wide variety of “hands-on” activities designed to build a strong musical foundation through:
  • Drumming & percussion instrument play
  • Developing the singing voice
  • Movement, both creative and structured
  • Building the necessary listening skills to lead to long-term success in instrumental study

  • The first steps in reading music
  • The songs, stories and sounds from the world of nature in two environments: My Neighbourhood OR At the Seashore

Piano Prep II - Music Makers Around the World

Class length: 50 mins - 1 hour, once each week

Description: This year-long Music Makers around the World class is Level II of our Preparatory Piano sequential program designed to give your child a solid music-making foundation for the three-year Music Makers at the Piano curriculum.

Imagine your child being able to figure out what the notes on a sheet of music sound like without even touching an instrument, or listening to a song and identifying the musical patterns to be able to write them. Now that's true music literacy- the ability to see what you hear and hear what you see! This class is designed to help your child establish a solid music foundation – singing, ear training, playing instruments, ensemble work and creative movement activities.

Musical Activities & Goals: We engage your child's fascination with all things new and different as a part of developing music literacy and experiencing the joy of making music together. We continue our musical explorations with 4 themes: an exciting cultural study of the heritage of the Amerindians, British Isles, Germany, Caribbean and beloved folk songs, experiencing native songs, instruments, dances, stories, and customs while building keyboard skills and understanding musical notation.

Instruments Used: Drums, Barred Instruments, Piano-Keyboard. Children will be able to translate their newly acquired skills onto the tenor steelpan and keyboard. Throughout the year (two semesters), the children will use the piano keyboards, as they begin playing parts of their songs using the same method they'll use in Tocando Piano Class Level 1 (Music Makers: At the Keyboard)—an excellent preparation for piano classes next year.

Preparing for next year: At the end of the second Semester, children and parents are encouraged to join us for our Intro to Piano (Intro to Music Makers At the Piano) Class, where they will be introduced to the group, aural method used in Tocando Piano Class Level 1 (Music Makers: At the Keyboard)

Materials: Folder(s) containing songs, activities, parent guide, and CD/Digital Download High Quality Music recordings (Folder should be brought to class each week

Music Makers At the Piano 1
Age: At least 7 yrs / Std 1 Primary
Required: A Keyboard/Piano at home & CD player/mobile device. Talk to us for recommendations before you purchase.
Duration: Year-long; Parrandero & Calypso Semesters
Class Length: 50 mins with 10 min review with parents

Description: This specialised Year-long group Piano class is an extension of the work done in Piano Prep II Music Makers Around the World and follows a very sequential approach to building keyboard skills and understanding musical notation. This programme is designed to teach the children to play the songs they've been hearing, singing and dancing to throughout the years of early-childhood; it is the final step on the pathway to music literacy.

Musical Goals: Lessons at the keyboard in small groups allow the children to experience the delight in making music with others, while at the same time encouraging the development of rhythmic competency, listening skills, singing, and music-reading.

Learning Outcomes: Throughout the year, the children will become comfortable with D, C and G major 5 finger positions as well as d, c and e minor. They will be introduced to the I and V7 (also i and v7) chords to accompany their songs. Transposing their repertoire to all know positions is encouraged as each new position is introduced.

Added to the wide ranging Classical and Folk repertoire, they'll also learn songs in our own musical culture including Parang, Calypso, Chutney and Soca.

Activities & Instruments: In addition to playing the piano-keyboards, the children will be involved in drumming and dancing to nurture their rhythmic development, singing to nurture their tonal development, and echoing patterns to nurture their aural development as well as composing and musical dictation activities to lead the child to music literacy.

Parents Note: The ideal age to begin is between ages 6 and 8 years. Starting too early often causes frustration, especially if a child's fine motor skills are not well developed. A child who begins at age 7 will usually progress faster than one who is made to start at age 5.

Outcome: Children who complete Music Makers: At the Piano not only possess a strong desire to make music, they have the aural and keyboard skills that will enable them to do so. It prepares children for future keyboard study, as well as whatever musical adventures the future holds.

Materials: Children will receive Keyboard book for playing pieces, aural training, composing and theory as well as notation/reading games, practice and listening CDs and digital download codes, a card file, and a parent handbook.

Pre-requisite: Piano Prep II - Music Makers Around the World if younger than 8yrs old.

Required: A Keyboard/Piano at home along with a CD player/mobile device kept near the piano/keyboard for ease of access for daily practice. Talk to us for recommendations before you purchase. Have your own keyboard, stand and bench to bring to class? Save up to $200!
